In 2004, 649 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads of Northumbria, including 243 pedestrians and cyclists. The partnership believes that driver education is a vital component in reducing the number of casualties on Northumbria roads, which is why we fully support the Northumbria Speed Awareness Scheme managed by our partners, DriveTech. Very few of us drive with the intention of blatantly disregarding speed limits, but we could all benefit from an extra reminder of the highway code and our responsibilities as drivers from time to time. Speed is one of the single biggest causes of road traffic collisions and it is hoped that educating drivers will address what has appeared to be a growing acceptance of speeding and speeding penalties.
