Safe and enjoyable high performance car driving21 May 2007As quoted in May's Fleet World magazine, Jim Kirkwood, DriveTech's managing director said "In many respects, driving a high performance car requires the same skills - for example, hazard awareness, observation techniques and speed control - as a family saloon. The key difference is discipline. By definition, high performance company car drivers are invariably driving on public roads, not on a race track, and so need to balance the chance to enjoy and experience their car's performance as well as giving themselves the time and space to respond to a hazard. This requires even more discipline to ensure that they have 'room to manoeuvre' if they need to. For instance, there is little point on having the best brakes in the world if you are distracted when driving or hoping that the car behind can stop as quickly as you can! Driver training is one way to reduce risk for all drivers. High performance drivers are only unique in that they need additional discipline to use and enjoy their car's enhanced performance when it's safe to do so." EDITOR’S NOTESDriveTech is the UK's leading provider of ‘driving at work’ risk management, driver assessment and driver training solutions. DriveTech’s goal is to reduce both an organisation’s vehicle business costs and the personal risk for ‘at work’ drivers, by significantly improving driver ABC – attitude, behaviour and competence – therefore supporting driver safety and corporate ‘duty of care’ requirements. DriveTech (UK) has won the Institute of Transport Management’s ‘Fleet Award for Driver Training’ in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 and its ‘European Driver Safety Specialist’ award in 2005.
