As the clocks turn back for winter, driver training specialist Drivetech, part of the AA, is urging business drivers to kit out their cars ahead of the upcoming chilly season.

Employers are responsible for keeping drivers safe on the roads and ensuring vehicles driven by employers – even employee owned vehicles – are adequately maintained. Employers failing to do so may be liable for prosecution in the event of a fatal accident under the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007.

Drivetech is urging drivers to ensure they have the following to hand in case of an emergency during the winter months:

  • A hi-vis jacket – essential so you can be seen by other motorists if you leave your vehicle in the dark
  • Sunglasses – winter sun can significantly impact driver visibility, so beat the glare with a pair
  • Mobile phone and phone charger
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription medicines
  • Warm clothes
  • A snack in case your journey takes longer than expected – water-heavy foods like bananas and strawberries can help you stay hydrated
  • A litre of water per passenger – dehydration can strike in the winter months too
  • Winter specific car aids, including de-icer, ice scraper, torch, sturdy footwear, screen wash
  • Breakdown recovery contact details

Drivetech’s winter driving tips are available as a pdf and can be found here as a tool to share with staff.
