Riding a motorcycle can be an exhilarating experience, offering riders a sense of freedom and excitement unparalleled by other modes of transportation. However, with this thrill comes the responsibility of ensuring your safety and that of others on the road. Motorcycles make up just 1% of total road traffic, yet they accounted for 20% of all road deaths in 2020.[1]

In this motorcycle advisory feature, we will discuss some crucial tips and best practices for staying safe while enjoying your two-wheeled adventures.

Invest in proper riding gear:

Wearing the right protective gear is essential for motorcycle riders. A high-quality helmet is a must, as it can significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in case of an accident. Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 69%.[2] Additionally, invest in a sturdy riding jacket, gloves, pants, and boots to protect your body from abrasions and impacts. Choose gear with reflective materials to increase your visibility to other road users.

Be alert and help yourself:

Anticipate potential hazards on the road and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Always stay vigilant and be prepared for sudden changes in traffic or road conditions. Almost half (40%) of motorcycle fatalities in multiple vehicle crashes involved a car.[3] Use your mirrors and be aware of your blind spots, and make your intentions clear to other motorists through appropriate signalling and body language.

Motorcycle maintenance:

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring your motorcycle’s optimal performance and safety. Check the tyre pressure, oil and fluid levels, and brake pads regularly. Inspect your chain or belt for wear and proper tension, and make sure all lights and signals are functioning correctly. Address any issues as soon as they arise to prevent potential accidents.

Consider all road users and conditions

Watch the vehicle ahead of the one you’re following. And the one ahead of it, and the one ahead of it. Check over your shoulder before making any change of direction – this is often called the ‘life saver’. Also consider wet or slippery surfaces, strong winds, and reduced visibility due to fog or rain can significantly impact your motorcycle’s handling and stability. From 2016 to 2021, 1,443 motorcyclists where involved in fatal or serious accidents because they were travelling too fast in certain conditions.[4] Adapt your riding style by reducing your speed, increasing following distances, and being extra cautious in these conditions.

Obey traffic laws and regulations:

Respect speed limits, traffic signs, and signals at all times. Be mindful of local laws and regulations, as they are designed to keep all road users safe. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as they can impair your judgment and reaction times.

Riding a motorcycle can be an incredible experience, but it’s essential to prioritise safety at all times. By following these motorcycle advisory tips, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying your two-wheeled adventures while minimising risks and ensuring a safe ride for yourself and others on the road.
