Some of the UK’s biggest fleet operators – BT, Openreach, Mitie and others – are calling for a national campaign to boost public support for electric vehicles (EVs). In response to this, we believe there are voices missing from this conversation – those of the people behind the wheel.

Boosting EV adoption rates isn’t just about charging points and government incentives. It’s about ensuring drivers have the knowledge and confidence to make the switch. Right now, too many myths and misunderstandings stand in the way of progress. Range anxiety, uncertainty around regenerative braking and confusion about charging best practices are real concerns. A bold public campaign must not only promote EVs but also equip drivers with the skills they need to embrace them fully.

Driver training must take centre stage. At Drivetech, we see first-hand that when drivers receive the right training, their confidence soars, and they get the most out of their vehicles. Big businesses are already leading the way on this, including The AA’s own iconic yellow van fleet. But to bring everyone along on this journey, we need to empower drivers – not just hand them the keys and hope for the best.

Let’s be clear though. An EV is still just a car – not a spaceship. The fundamentals of driving remain the same. What’s needed isn’t excessive or complicated retraining, but rather simple, accessible familiarisation to help drivers get the best out of their vehicles. Small changes in driving habits—like understanding regenerative braking, maximising range, and optimising charging—can have a big impact on safety, efficiency, and confidence.

The UK’s EV transition must be built on knowledge. Let’s make sure no driver is left behind. Let’s put people at the heart of the EV transition, ensuring driver voices are heard as part of any future campaign.
