How It Works

The journey to earning this prestigious qualification begins with a 15-question theory test. This test covers advanced driving techniques, vehicle technology, and dynamics, setting the stage for the next step: the on-road test.

During the on-road assessment, drivers are evaluated not only on traditional advanced driving methods but also on efficient journey planning and the ability to drive with smooth, controlled precision. You’ll need to demonstrate an acute awareness of your vehicle, your driving habits, and how to harmonise every element of driving. All while providing a clear, confident commentary at a level that is comfortable to the driver (being mindful of any reasonable adjustments that the driver may want or need), revealing the thought process behind your interactions with the road and other users.

Key Focus Areas

The AA Advanced Driving Diploma emphasises:

Safety: Maintaining the correct position, speed, and timing.
Fuel efficiency: Driving that optimises vehicle performance and minimises fuel consumption.
Advanced skills: Using enhanced observation, anticipation, and planning, in line with the highest standards of the GDE (Goals for Driver Education) matrix.

The Results

Upon completion, you’ll receive a detailed debrief and a star grading (ranging from 2* to 5*) based on your performance. A comprehensive report will follow, serving as both feedback and a personalised development plan, highlighting areas for improvement and providing guidance for further self-study.

A fail occurs if you:

Fail the theory test three times.
Commit serious, dangerous, or illegal acts during the on-road test.

The diploma remains valid for three years, after which a retest is required to retain your qualification. While you can book the test as a standalone exam, we highly recommend taking advantage of our bespoke training with a Drivetech trainer.
