About the course

The National Motorway Awareness Course for digital classrooms (iNMAC) is an engaging, interesting and enjoyable intervention that leads to a sustained change in how they drive on motorways, including Smart Motorways. It is an educational and rehabilitative option for those who have committed an offence on motorways, and who have been diverted from court by the police through the issuing of a Conditional Fixed Penalty Notice (CFPN).

The course does not embarrass individuals, judge them, or hold them to account for the offence committed. Nor will the trainer presenting the course ask anyone in the group to talk about their offence. People who successfully complete the course (and any other conditions set by the police) will not be prosecuted for the original offence.

The course lasts 3 hours, and the price may vary depending on the referring police force.

Attending the course

The course is designed to take you on a journey that:

  • Explains what a smart motorway is, how it works, and the benefits it brings
  • Highlights the signs you will encounter on smart motorways
  • Explores the potential consequences to you and others if you speed or drive in closed lanes
  • Demonstrates the difference speeding makes if you need to stop suddenly
  • Explores the situations that make it more difficult to comply with motorway rules
  • Helps you build an action plan about how you are going to drive differently in the future

Most attendees will have committed an offence on smart motorways, so the focus of the course is explaining how smart motorways work and the meaning of the signs they may encounter. However, some attendees may be referred for driving on the hard shoulder or failing to comply with a red X on a traditional motorway.
